Facebook recently announced a new app called Facebook Lite. The app will be a “lighter” and quicker version of the current Facebook application on mobile devices. Facebook Lite is primarily designed to run on “low end” phones and markets that still rely on the 2G networks. The goal is to expand their reach of users to areas that previously did not support more advanced technology.
Facebook Lite only takes up to 252 KB of data when downloaded as well as 1 megabyte of storage space. It has also been fully optimized for the slower networks as well as a high efficiency. The app doesn’t consuming cellular data, which is actually a good thing due to the fact that there are markets out there in which data is still priced at a premium.
As of now, the app is available in specific markets such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Zimbabwe. However, the app is only accessible to people who own android phones. As more people in the growing market are buying smartphones, and as average smartphone prices worldwide continue to decrease, Facebook wants to make sure they are offering their service to those customers who cannot afford or access the high broadband networks. This resulted in Facebook’s invention of this new app.
